According to the Thyroid Foundation of Canada up to half of patients with thyroid disorders remain undiagnosed!
Whether your thyroid produces too much or too little hormone, this can lead to a number of health problems down the line including heart failure, irregular heart rhythms, brittle bones, vision loss, high cholesterol, and nerve damage.
This is especially important in pregnant women since thyroid disorders are 4-7 times more common in women and pregnant women often need 20-30% more thyroid hormone than non-pregnant women.
Imbalanced thyroid levels can also negatively affect a pregnant mother and newborn including causing:
- Heart disease
- Heavy bleeding after child birth
- Muscle weakness
- Spontaneous abortion
- Low birth weight
Ask your doctor for a referral to a thyroid specialist if you have been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder!
