Colon Cancer Screening: A Simple Test That Could Save Your Life

When it comes to cancer, we often think of it as something unpredictable or difficult to detect until it’s too late. But colon cancer (also called colorectal cancer) is one of the few cancers that can often be prevented or caught early through routine screening.

In fact, colon cancer screening is one of the most effective tools in modern medicine—and yet, many eligible adults still put it off.

At Intrepid Health, we want to change that. If you’re approaching age 50 (or younger, if you have certain risk factors), it’s time to talk to your family doctor about screening. The process is easier than you think—and the impact can be lifesaving.

What Is Colon Cancer?

Colon cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the large intestine (colon) or rectum, typically starting as small, noncancerous growths called polyps. Over time, some of these polyps can develop into cancer if left undetected and untreated.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Canada, but it’s also one of the most preventable cancers.

When caught in its early stages, colon cancer is highly treatable. Even better: screening can find and remove precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer.

Who Should Get Screened?

The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care recommends routine colon cancer screening for adults aged 50 to 74 who are at average risk (meaning no symptoms and no personal or strong family history of the disease).

If you have any of the following risk factors, you may need to start screening earlier or undergo more frequent testing:

  • A family history of colon cancer or polyps
  • A personal history of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis)
  • Genetic conditions such as Lynch syndrome or familial adenomatous polyposis
  • Certain lifestyle factors (such as smoking, heavy alcohol use, obesity, or low-fiber diets)

At Intrepid Health, we review your medical history and family background to determine your personalized screening schedule.

What Are the Screening Options?

Colon cancer screening doesn’t always mean a colonoscopy. For most people at average risk, screening begins with a simple at-home test called the FIT test.

1. Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT)

  • This is a non-invasive stool test that checks for hidden blood in your stool—a possible early sign of colon cancer or polyps.
  • It’s done once every two years.
  • The test is free in Ontario for eligible patients aged 50–74 through the ColonCancerCheck program.
  • You can pick it up at your family doctor’s office or receive it by mail.
  • If the test is negative, you just repeat it every two years.
  • If the test is positive, your doctor will refer you for a colonoscopy for further investigation.

2. Colonoscopy

  • A procedure where a doctor uses a flexible tube with a camera to examine the entire colon.
  • It allows for immediate removal of polyps during the procedure.
  • Recommended if you have symptoms, a positive FIT test, or are at higher risk due to family history or other factors.
  • Typically done every 10 years if no abnormalities are found.

While colonoscopy requires a bowel prep and sedation, it provides a complete view of the colon and allows doctors to take action on the spot.

Why Is Screening So Important?

Many people with early-stage colon cancer have no symptoms. That’s why routine screening is critical—even if you feel perfectly healthy.

When colon cancer is detected early (stage 1 or 2), the five-year survival rate is over 90%. But when detected later(stage 4), survival rates drop significantly.

Screening also gives you the opportunity to prevent cancer altogether. By detecting and removing polyps, you stop cancer from ever developing in the first place.

Common Myths About Colon Cancer Screening

Let’s bust a few common misconceptions:

“I’m not having any symptoms, so I don’t need screening.”
Many early cancers cause no symptoms. Screening is about catching it before symptoms begin.

“I don’t want to do a colonoscopy.”
You don’t have to—at least not right away. The FIT test is a great first step and is recommended for most average-risk patients.

“It’s embarrassing.”
The FIT test is done at home, in private. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about—taking care of your health is a sign of strength, not shame.

“Cancer doesn’t run in my family, so I’m not at risk.”
Most people diagnosed with colon cancer have no family history. Age and lifestyle play a big role.

Symptoms to Watch For

While screening is essential, it’s also important to recognize the signs that could suggest a problem. Contact your family doctor if you experience:

  • Blood in your stool
  • A change in bowel habits that lasts more than a few weeks
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent abdominal discomfort or cramps
  • A feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely
  • Fatigue or low iron levels (anemia)

Don’t delay these concerns—early action can make a big difference.
