As the leaves begin to turn and temperatures start to drop, cold and flu season makes its annual return. While many cases are mild, respiratory viruses like influenza and the common cold can still cause significant disruption to your daily life — from missed work or school days to more serious health complications in vulnerable populations.
At Intrepid Health, we believe that prevention is the best medicine. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself and your family this fall and winter.
Cold vs. Flu: What’s the Difference?
Both the common cold and influenza (flu) are viral respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses and present somewhat differently:
| Symptom | Cold | Flu |
| Onset | Gradual | Sudden |
| Fever | Rare | Common (often high) |
| Fatigue | Mild | Moderate to severe |
| Cough | Mild to moderate | Persistent and dry |
| Body Aches | Mild | Often severe |
| Sneezing & Runny Nose | Common | Sometimes |
| Headache | Rare | Common |
| Chills | Rare | Common |
While colds are usually self-limiting, the flu can lead to more serious complications such as pneumonia, especially in older adults, young children, and individuals with chronic health conditions.
Flu Shots: Your Best Defense
The flu vaccine is your strongest line of defense against seasonal influenza. It significantly reduces your risk of getting sick and helps prevent serious complications if you do contract the virus. The flu shot is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older, particularly:
- Seniors (65+)
- People with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, heart disease)
- Pregnant individuals
- Healthcare and essential workers
- Children under 5 years old
At Intrepid Health, we will begin offering flu shots starting this fall. Appointments can be booked online or in person.
Everyday Prevention Tips
In addition to getting vaccinated, these simple steps can help you avoid illness and reduce the spread of viruses:
- Wash Your Hands Often
Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing, or being in public places. Hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol is a good backup when you’re on the go. - Avoid Touching Your Face
Viruses can enter your body through the eyes, nose, or mouth — clean hands are your first line of defense. - Stay Home When Sick
Even mild symptoms can spread viruses to others. If you’re feeling unwell, stay home, rest, and monitor your symptoms. Our clinic offers virtual appointments if you’re unsure whether to come in. - Disinfect Frequently-Touched Surfaces
Door handles, phones, keyboards, and countertops should be cleaned regularly — especially in shared environments. - Strengthen Your Immune System
Sleep, nutrition, hydration, and stress management all contribute to a healthier immune response. Don’t underestimate the power of small lifestyle habits.
Should You See a Doctor?
You can often manage a cold or mild flu at home, but it’s important to seek medical attention if you experience:
- Difficulty breathing or chest pain
- A fever lasting more than three days
- Confusion or severe fatigue
- Symptoms that improve but then worsen
- A child with dehydration, persistent vomiting, or high fever
Our team at Intrepid Health is available for in-person and virtual assessments to help determine the right level of care.
Children and Cold/Flu Season
Children in school or daycare are especially susceptible to catching and spreading respiratory viruses. Teach kids to wash their hands regularly, cover their mouths when coughing, and avoid sharing food or drinks.
Parents should also be on the lookout for more serious symptoms like wheezing, ear pain, or rapid breathing — and consult their physician when in doubt. Pediatric flu shots are available at our clinic and are especially recommended for children with asthma or immune conditions.
Cold, Flu… or COVID-19?
COVID-19 and the flu share many overlapping symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, cough, and body aches. Rapid testing may be needed to tell them apart. If you’re experiencing respiratory symptoms, please contact the clinic before visiting so we can provide guidance on testing and isolation if needed.
