Sun Safety & Skin Health: Enjoy the Sunshine, Protect Your Glow

As the days grow longer and temperatures rise, many of us look forward to spending more time outdoors. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a day at the beach, or time spent gardening, sunshine can lift our spirits and help our bodies produce vitamin D. But while enjoying the sun has its benefits, excessive exposure without protection can harm your skin and increase your risk of serious health conditions, including skin cancer.

At Intrepid Health, we’re here to help you make the most of summer—safely. With just a few smart habits, you can protect your skin now and prevent problems later in life.

Why Sun Protection Matters

Your skin is your body’s largest organ. It plays essential roles in regulating temperature, preventing dehydration, and protecting against infection. However, it’s also highly vulnerable to the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

Prolonged or unprotected UV exposure can lead to:

  • Painful sunburns
  • Hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone
  • Premature aging, including wrinkles and fine lines
  • Actinic keratosis, a precancerous skin condition
  • Skin cancers, including:
    • Basal cell carcinoma
    • Squamous cell carcinoma
    • Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer

In Canada, over 80,000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year. While most are treatable when caught early, melanoma can be fatal if it spreads. Fortunately, with proper sun protection and early detection, most skin cancers are preventable.

Healthy Sun Habits for Every Day

Sun safety isn’t just for beach days—it’s an everyday routine. Here’s how to guard your skin from harmful UV rays:

✅ Apply Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen Daily

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply generously to all exposed skin 15–30 minutes before sun exposure, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

Tip: Don’t forget commonly missed areas like your ears, neck, tops of your feet, and the back of your hands.

✅ Wear Protective Clothing

Opt for lightweight, tightly woven fabrics that cover your arms and legs. A wide-brimmed hat offers additional protection for your face, ears, and neck. Choose sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection to guard your eyes and the delicate skin around them.

✅ Seek Shade When Possible

The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Try to stay in the shade during these peak hours, especially if you’re spending extended time outdoors. Use umbrellas, trees, tents, or canopies when available.

✅ Avoid Tanning Beds

Artificial UV radiation from tanning beds is just as dangerous—if not more so—than natural sunlight. It greatly increases your risk of melanoma, particularly if used before the age of 30. Embrace your natural skin tone and consider sunless tanning products if you’re looking for a glow.

✅ Stay Hydrated and Moisturized

Sun exposure and heat can dehydrate your body and dry out your skin. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and use a gentle moisturizer to help maintain your skin’s natural barrier.

Skin Checks: A Critical Part of Prevention

Early detection of skin changes can save lives. Performing monthly skin self-exams can help you spot potential issues before they become serious.

Use the ABCDE rule when examining moles or spots:

  • A – Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other
  • B – Border: Edges are irregular, ragged, or blurred
  • C – Colour: Uneven colours or multiple shades in one spot
  • D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)
  • E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, colour, or sensation

If you notice anything new or changing, especially if it itches, bleeds, or doesn’t heal, book an appointment with a healthcare provider or dermatologist right away.
