The link between high blood sugars and heart attack

Diabetes occurs when your body can’t properly break down sugar for energy, leading to high blood sugars. This is usually due to resistance to a hormone called insulin, which is important for your body to be able to use sugar.

Did you know that 40% of patients who have a heart attack also have a history of diabetes! This is also true for 30% of patients who have a stroke, 50% of patients receiving dialysis for kidney failure, and 70% of patients who need an amputation that is not due to injury.

Long-term high blood sugars can cause damage to your blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and many other organs. Prevention is the key to staying healthy and that’s why it’s so important to see your family doctor or specialist regularly.

Are your sugar levels higher than they should be or are you on insulin?

Make sure to book an appointment with your family doctor and ask for a referral to a diabetes specialist!
